Advice on vaccine use published

Two scientific committees have suggested that residents and staff of residential care homes for the elderly or disabled and other institutional facilities should be given top priority to receive COVID-19 vaccinations.   The Scientific Committee on Vaccine Preventable Diseases and the Scientific Committee on Emerging & Zoonotic Diseases under the Centre for Health Protection today published the consensus interim recommendations on using COVID-19 vaccines in Hong Kong, which were made after a meeting on January 7.   The Chief Executive’s expert advisory panel also joined the two committees at the meeting.   The recommendations focused on two vaccines, namely BNT162b2 provided by Fosun Pharma/BioNTech and AZD1222 provided by AstraZeneca.   The committees recommended that both vaccines consist of a schedule of two doses. Individuals should complete their vaccination with the same type of vaccine.   The committees suggested that the second priority for vaccination should be given to workers in healthcare settings, workers in other essential services at increased risk of exposure to COVID-19, and people aged 60 or above.   The third priority should be accorded to people with chronic medical problems aged between 16 and 59.   Click here for details of the recommendations.
